When established in 1950, the Central Conservatory of Music set up the institute of ethnological music, which is regarded as one of the significant policies to construct a new styled music college. After that, the institute was renamed consecutively as “Department of Composition and Research” in 1977, “ Institute of Music Research ” in 1985 and “ Institute of Musicology ” in 2000. Through half a century's construction and accumulation, it has been established a nationally first-class scientific research group in Central Conservatory of Music, which engages in the studies of musicology and consists of scholars with different ages of old, middle and young generations. They have achieved some nationally leading academic results in various scientific research fields of musicology, e.g., musical aesthetics, history of Chinese and Western music, ethnological musicology, technical theories of composition and compositional studies, theory studies of musical performance, etc. All of these are formed a solid foundations for the Research Institute of Musicology to be approved as key scientific research institute with national level.

　　 In 1999, Institute of Musicology initiated to apply with the Education Ministry, for “Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences in Universities”. Pursuant to related regulations of the Education Ministry and based on overall system reform, the previous Research Institute of Music was officially renamed as Research Institute of Musicology in 2000, which was approved in Sep. 2001. It, therefore, became the only key research institute among the national artistic subjects.
